Summer Travel Series ~ Rosecliff Mansion Newport, RI

Hello everyone.  I hope you all had a great weekend.  Weather here has been sunny and extremely hot around here.  And when summer is in full swing, my husband and I love to plan long weekend trips.

Last month, we visited one of our favorite destinations, the beautiful resort community of Newport, Rhode Island.  This is such a great summertime and autumn escape.  Great restaurants, wonderful beaches, gilded age mansions and amazing ocean views.  It is also where Jacqueline Bouvier and John Kennedy were married on September 12, 1953.

During the Gilded Age of the late nineteenth century, Newport, Rhode Island, was the exclusive playground for America's wealthy such as the Vanderbilt family, Berwinds' and Astors' who built grand "summer cottages" there.  It was also a summer getaway for the Kennedy's.

One of the mansions which toured during this visit was Rosecliff mansion.  This is certainly one of the less ornate cottages in Newport but yet elegant and romantic.  One that I can surely feel comfortable living in....Ha Ha..

This summer cottage was commissioned by Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Orlrichs in 1899 and modeled by architect Stanford White after the Grand Trianon, garden retreat of French kings at Versailles.   The house was completed in 1902, at a reported cost of $2.5 million and was the location for many grand and fairy tale dinner parties.   Rosecliff has also been the location of several movies such as The Great Gatsby, True Lies, Amistad and 27 Dresses.

Rosecliff stayed in the Oelrichs family until 1941, then went through several changes of ownership before  being purchased by Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Monroe on New Orleans in 1947.

If you have not been to this pretty coastal town, I highly encourage you to.  And if you love history, you will definitely fall in love with this little gem of a town.

Next, road trip if St. Micheal's in Maryland this fourth of July weekend.  I can't wait to see what I find there.

Thank you for visiting.  Wishing you a wonderful week.

Hugs,

Janet

  10. The one part of the country I have never been to is the Northeast. I don't really make it beyond New York City. This is an amazing home. It is crazy that folks used to live and entertain like this, isn't it? It looks like you had a lovely visit.
